Harvard Creates a Clothing Line?!

That's right. The university has inked a ten-year licensing deal with clothing manufacturer Wearwolf Group for a line of contemporary men's apparel called Harvard Yard. The line includes "short-sleeve plaid shirts, Liberty print wovens, seersucker shorts, regimental stripes, sporty knits, patterned jackets and fancy pants — all in a contemporary, tapered fit," according to WWD.

Prices range from $165 for pants to $495 for sport coats. The line's creative director, John Fowler, told WWD that designers drew from photos of students lounging in Harvard Yard in the sixties. “It’s a style that has become current again and not just with the American consumer. We think Harvard Yard will have global appeal.”

Brixton is known for their well-priced, high-style hats. And now they've added apparel to the collection. The button-ups, outerwear, and long-sleeved henleys look like the perfect pieces to keep you warm this coming fall and winter. I remember meeting the two designers back in Chicago not too long ago. Nice guys. They told me about the apparel plans, so I'm glad to see they followed through. Look for these pieces and more at Brixton's online store.

NY Times hits Jake, hard

Read "The Trouble with Jake"

Starting the story calling the owners "beefy" pretty much sets the tone for this article written by Eric Wilson at the NY Times. The story continues to hit the owners of Jake, Jim Wetzel and Lance Lawson, over and over, spilling the beans that they owed their vendors a pretty penny.

Here's what I can't believe: 1. that NY Times cares to print an article about one little Chicago store 2. that they would do it in such a manner that pretty much kills Jake's reputation and 3. that it really is true, and the two owners really pissed off a lot of people.

Here's why I care: 1. I know Jim and Lance. I've met them numerous times while working with the Mayor's Fashion Council for the City of Chicago. 2. The store I work at now is a competitor, so to say, of Jake. 3. I've heard the woes about Jake's financial trouble from some of their owed vendors directly.

Anyway, this was a very interesting story to find in my inbox this morning. Lesson being, fuck glitz and glamour. Business is business.

I remember seeing Canadian designer Philip Sparks present his Spring 2009 collection at last years Gen Art's Fresh Faces show in Chicago (which I ended up working on). I found myself surprised that a such talented menswear designer was found for the show (too bad they couldn't find anything in the Midwest). regardless, things seem to be getting better as far as I can tell from this Spring 2010 collection.
